sorry that is still incorrect. Offside has nothing to do with what position the player plays (forward, midfield, defence or goalkeeper). If a team puts his goalkeeper (call him Peter) in attack, and a forward passes him the ball THE MOMENT Peter is beyond the defending team's second last defender, Peter is still offside even if he is a goalkeeper of the attacking team. If Peter plays any other position he would still be offside under the same situation.

From FIFA Law Book 2007-2008 [Offside] Offence A PLAYER (not only Forwards) in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team (not ONLY Defender), he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by: • interfering with play or • interfering with an opponent or • gaining an advantage by being in that position with NO relation to if he is in the penalty (clear or not) or whether in front of the goalkeeper

I dont know if this is right but, lets say Totti were to pass to Pirlo, if Pirlo is in not in his right position (Left Mid) then that means the moment he is not in his position and the ball is played to him it is ruled as offside?

oh wait, Offside is when the person passes to someone who is clear in the penalty area infront of the Goalkeeper.

Italy shouldnt have had to do the shootout, plus France's player dived so it was a cheated penalty, its only if a defender passes to a Forward then its ruled for offside. Totti is mid-field, he took the free kick and Toni got it in so its a Legitimate goal and it would have been 2-1 or 2-0 for Italy.
