Description:
This is sung and edited by me and it's the first vid I've ever made so be kind! The song is "she moved through the faire", a traditional song. Forgive me for the background noise, that's the TV :) best versions are probbly the ones sung by Mary Black or Cara Dillon Lyrics: My young love said to me, "My mother won't mind And my father won't slight you for your lack of kind" And she stepped away from me and this she did say: It will not be long, love, till our wedding day" As she stepped away from me and she moved through the fair And fondly I watched her move here and move there And then she turned homeward with one star awake Like the swan in the evening moves over the lake The people were saying, no two e'er were wed But one had a sorrow that never was said And I smiled as she passed with her goods and her gear, And that was the last that I saw of my dear. Last night she came to me, my dead love came in So softly she came that her feet made no din As she laid her hand on me and this she did say "It will not be long, love, 'til our wedding day" |

qwertyTRiG ::: Favorites "And my father won't slight you for your lack of kine" Kine, not kind. "My father won't slight you for having few cattle (i.e., being poor)." Kine is an old word; it's used in The Lord of the Rings too. (Not the film versions, of course.) 07-08-08 13:51:43 _____________________________________________________
qwertyTRiG ::: Favorites Oh, I forgot to mention that your singing is beautiful. (Not that I know much of anything about music. Very few songs grab me. This is one of the few.) 07-08-08 13:57:07 _____________________________________________________

collapsedbeing ::: Favorites Kine is an archaic plural of cow, whereas kind in this sense refers to general goods and property, as in the same sense that one would say "payment in kind" (rather than implying that the suitor is not pleasant or genteel). Either way, the line says that the father won't object to the marriage because the suitor is not rich. Both versions are normally considered correct. 07-08-11 14:28:18 _____________________________________________________
qwertyTRiG ::: Favorites That's an interesting thought which hadn't occured to me. I'm familiar, of course, with the phrase /payment in kind/, but I hadn't thought of that meaning of the word. I'd always taken it to mean 'payment of the same kind': you give me something and I'll return the favour without any money changing hands. In this interpretation of the phrase, the word /kind/ retains its normal meaning of 'type, sort'. 07-08-11 15:33:33 _____________________________________________________
