Majid Boutrous arguement in this piece was clearly an attempt to instill fear in the West and amongst minorities. Theocracy in countries like Egypt would be, essentially, democratic since it would be the will of the people. His support for "secularism" is the new code word for godless communism with brutal repression of personal freedoms and expression. Which is an apt description of not only Egypt, but every country on the map stretching from Morocco to Pakistan.

I think Islam is on the rise and theres no pint in hiding this fact. It's better to forge partnership with moderate and balanced Islamic parties rather than extremists and terrorists. Muslim brotherhood could have taken matters by force since its inception. But rather they beleived in reform. They beleived in democracy. However, we don't see any of that in Egypt now. USA should have sat down long time ago with Muslim brotherhood to fight war on terror.

The best way to moderate extremists is including them within the system, and not shutting them out. Turkey's experience should inspire Egyptian society.

It's all a bunch of crap. There isn't a single 'democracy' on the map from Morocco to Saudi Arabia, not only because those in power (monarchs, dictators, military) and world powers (Europe, America, etc.) won't allow it. The reason? Parties like the AK Party, Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood would be elected by the Muslim-majority voters under a democratic system.

Al-Qaeda's Ayman al-Zawahiri was a member of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood. That should tell you something about this terrorist-supporting organization.
